How to Turn a Chicken Egg Basket into Spring Farmhouse Decor

I've had the same chicken egg basket for years. Yes. It's been useful, but honestly, I usually forget to bring it with me to collect eggs and end up stuffing them into my pockets. I was thinking about my spring farmhouse decor and my old chicken egg basket came to mind. Here's how I combined a decor idea and an old egg basket for an updated and refreshed spring look.

The good thing about this farmhouse decoration is that I already had everything I needed on hand. If you don't, no worries. This is not a break-the-bank kind of project.

Here's how I combined a decor idea and an old chicken egg basket for an updated and refreshed spring look.

Supplies I Used
  • Chicken Egg Basket (Metal basket found in farm supply stores.)
  • Spray Paint (I used Krylon Pebbles Indoor/Outdoor)
  • Decorative Eggs
  • Paper Shreds (I used Easter basket shreds. They can be found year-round at the office supply store.)
  • Mason Jar or Vase
  • Floral Foam
  • Faux or Real Flowers

If your egg basket is like mine, it was originally a bright red. Now it's faded, chipped and rusted in spots. I decided to remedy this by spray painting my basket with an indoor/outdoor paint. I chose the color Pebbles because it's not a stark white yet it's light enough to be neutral for any season. (I'm already thinking about using this basket again and again!) Plus, we had some on hand from another project.

Once my chicken egg basket was fully covered with new paint and completely dry, it was time to get decorating.

Easter-Themed Chicken Egg Basket

Easter is the classic spring holiday and a refreshed chicken egg basket is perfect for the occasion! For this DIY farmhouse decoration, I added a tall, narrow vase to the basket first, that way it sat firmly on the bottom.

I then added some green paper Easter grass to match the leaves in my faux flowers. (Don't use plastic grass if you have pets. It can be harmful if it's eaten.) Next, I added decorative colored eggs until they reached the top of the vase.

Now's the time I added my flowers and then added more eggs to hide the vase.

Spring-Themed Chicken Egg Basket

There are lots of options for holiday-neutral uses for your chicken egg basket.

1. Grab some flowers and arrange them in a Mason jar. Put something on the bottom of your basket to elevate your Mason jar. I used floral foam for this. Insert neutral-colored paper shreds to cover the riser then put your Mason jar into the basket.

2. Fill the bottom of your chicken egg basket with neutral-colored shreds, then add a few decorative eggs in the colors of your choice to the top of the shreds.

3. Fill the bottom of your chicken egg basket with neutral-colored shreds, then add a few decorative farmhouse carrots to the top of the shreds.
